Maintenance of our heritage

January until October 2026

To preserve the unique story of Kasteel de Haar, we are constantly working to maintain our heritage: the castle and its buildings, the collection and the gardens. We do this before and behind the scenes, with care, craftsmanship and respect for the past. This is how we ensure that both our current visitors and future generations can experience the special history of the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt family.

Work on the grounds in 2026

In 2026, we will be carrying out major maintenance on the castle, the moat, and the Rose Garden. A large portion of this work has now been completed. The scaffolding around the castle has been dismantled, and the painting and masonry work on the castle is complete. The renovation of the Rose Garden and the Boxwood Parterre is also well underway.

On this page, we provide information about the nature and duration of the work, as well as the measures we are taking to ensure your visit is as accessible and enjoyable as possible. The castle and the remaining 53 hectares of the castle gardens will remain open to visitors throughout this entire period.

Maintenance rose garden and boxwood conservatory

The Rose Garden is being redesigned according to landscape architect Michael van Gessel’s 2008 plan. In doing so, we are returning to the eight-spoke wagon-wheel layout from 1914. 

In this design, the Rose Garden lies like a large brooch in the grass, intimately screened by eight columnar conifers, with the well and rose dome as the heart of the garden. The new roses, 32 varieties in shades of orange-pink, were carefully selected from the English rose nursery David Austin and are combined with pathways of crushed natural stone.

The new path layout has now been completed, and the lawns are turning green again. The paths and the ground still need to settle and harden further before the area can be safely opened to the public. Starting in May 2027, visitors will once again be able to admire the Rose Garden in full bloom.

The work consists of:

– Installation of a drainage system – completed;

– Reconstruction of the path network based on historical drawings – completed;

– Seeding the lawns – completed;

– Planting new roses – fall 2026.

   

What does this mean for you as a visitor?

– The Rose Garden and Boxwood Parterre are not yet open to the public;

- There is 1 route to the Castle, Chapel and Roman Garden;

- Via signposts you can easily find the right route .

- The castle and the remaining part of the castle gardens will remain open for visits during this entire period.

Maintenance of castle and moat

On the exterior of the castle, the window frames, the distinctive red-and-white shutters, and the wooden walkways have been painted. Scaffolding was required for this work due to the hard-to-reach areas above the moat. The scaffolding has since been dismantled, and the painting work has been completed.

The masonry on the exterior of the castle has also been restored. Work on the quay walls is well underway but not yet fully completed.

Construction traffic and safety

Now that a large part of the maintenance has been completed, there is significantly less construction traffic on the grounds. Around the remaining maintenance sites, you may still experience some inconvenience due to the delivery and removal of materials and other transport activities.

Of course, we are doing our very best to keep any inconvenience to a minimum. We kindly ask you to be aware of any construction traffic and to follow the posted route directions.
