Maintenance of our heritage

January until October 2026

To preserve the unique story of Kasteel de Haar, we are constantly working to maintain our heritage: the castle and its buildings, the collection and the gardens. We do this before and behind the scenes, with care, craftsmanship and respect for the past. This is how we ensure that both our current visitors and future generations can experience the special history of the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt family.

Work on the grounds in 2026

In 2026 we are carrying out major maintenance to the castle, the moat and the Rose Garden. On this page we inform you about the nature and duration of the work and the measures we are taking to make your visit as accessible and pleasant as possible. The castle and the remaining 53 acres of the castle gardens will remain open for visits throughout this period.

Maintenance rose garden and boxwood conservatory

The Rose Garden is currently being redesigned according to landscape architect Michael van Gessel's 2008 design. Thereby returning to the wagon wheel structure with eight spokes from 1914.

In this design, the Rose Garden lies like a large brooch in the grass, intimately screened by eight columnar conifers, with the well and rose dome as the heart of the garden. The new roses, 32 varieties in shades of orange-pink, were carefully selected from the English rose nursery David Austin and are combined with pathways of crushed natural stone.

This way we do justice to the history of the Rose Garden and visitors can admire the roses in full bloom again from May 2027.

The work consists of:

- Construction of drainage system;

- Rebuilding path structure according to historical drawings;

- Seeding of lawns;

- Planting new roses.

What does this mean for you as a visitor?

- The Rose Garden and Boxwood Parterre are not accessible;

- There is 1 route to the Castle, Chapel and Roman Garden;

- Via signposts you can easily find the right route .

- The castle and the remaining part of the castle gardens will remain open for visits during this entire period.

Maintenance of castle and moat

On the outside of the castle this season we are painting the window frames, the characteristic red and white shutters and the wooden weathercourses. Because of the castle moat, places that are difficult to reach, which painters can only reach via scaffolding.

Where necessary, we also repairthe masonry of the castle moat.

Construction traffic and safety

Major maintenance involves large equipment. In and around the entrance area and at the maintenance locations you might experience some inconvenience due to the supply and removal of materials and other transport. Of course we do our utmost to keep this inconvenience to a minimum, but unfortunately it is not always possible to prevent it entirely. We therefore kindly ask you to be alert for construction traffic and to follow the indicated route directions.

We thank you for your understanding - together we will ensure that Kasteel de Haar is preserved in all its glory!
