Concerts in the Chapel—A September Tradition

Concerts in the Chapel: Sounds of the Renaissance

Sunday, September 13 and 20, 2026

Baron and Baroness Van Zuylen van Nijevelt purchased an antiphonary in the late 19th century to serve as “decoration” for the castle. In September, the antiphonary was on display in the Main Hall. It is a colossal 16th-century Spanish specimen, bound in parchment, of course. After extensive restoration, the antiphonary was unveiled in the Chapel on November 22, 2025, and can now be admired in the Library. Harpsichordist and conductor Isaac Alonso de Molina performed pieces from the antiphonary with his choir at the unveiling ceremony in the Chapel. On September 13 and 20, one of his students, Uma Torres Tarrés, will perform music inspired by the antiphonary together with other musicians.

September 13 – Music at the Spanish Court

Let yourself be transported to Renaissance Spain, where music resonated in churches and at court. This concert brings secular songs from the *Cancionero de Palacio* to life, featuring vocals and historical instruments. It offers a surprising counterpoint to the religious music from De Haar Castle’s antiphonary. Just as the baron brought together art and heritage from different times and places in the castle, this concert brings together different musical worlds.

September 20 – Sounds from the Antiphonary

What kind of music was played around a 16th-century antiphonary? In this concert, historical wind instruments come together in music from the Spanish Renaissance, including pieces from the Cancionero de Uppsala. The focus is on the musical world of which the De Haar Castle antiphonary is also a part. Just like this extraordinary book, music and musical traditions traveled throughout Europe. In the Chapel, those centuries-old sounds can be heard once again, and the musical past comes to life.
